The Fat Tire Skinny
Hugely diverse terrain, tons of plants and animals (spider monkeys!), and a down-to-earth culture that’s all too easy to get along with. Costa Rica is a great choice for MTB travel, also since it’s easy to get to and has plenty of support for any dirt tourist.

Outfitting Notes
- Very wide variety of terrain, featuring natural and built trails
- Easy international travel to and from the country via San José Mineta International Airport (SJC), spend a few days there if you can as there’s lots to see and do
- While good mechanical support and equipment sources can be found in San Jose, once out in rural areas it’s wise to be self-supported
- Shirbach (above) rode a Pivot Switchblade (versatile all-mountain bike); mid-travel seems a good choice for the versatile rider looking for adventure
- There are two seasons in Costa Rica: dry and wet. December through April is the dry season. May through November is wet. More people during the dry, more mud in the wet. Choose accordingly!
- Spanish speaking. Duolingo is your friend!
